Substrate/Background CA/SA tank

i would like to keep a few cichlids ( green terror, jd, green texas) in my 120 gallon tank and i would like to know what substrate/ background to use?I want either a black substrate or a black backround... so confused, i need ideas!!!

I have a black bg/black diamond sand in my 55 with severum/spotted sd/ebjd and the sev is super dark and washed out. I just set up my 210 mixed african tank with pfs and a black bg and i love it.

How big is the grain of pool filter sand? Do you think that some of the poop could be removed by my sump or will I need to gravel vac every two days
