Hey, everyone, I'm still kind of new to the site, so if this thread is in the wrong place, I apologize in advance...

OK, I just learned the hard way to make sure your substrate is EXACTLY what you want BEFORE you get it running...I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of flack for this, but I've been away from fishkeeping for a while, and never used sand on the bottom, but in the end this decision was made because of sheer stupidity and inpulsiveness. So.....I thougt it would be cool to change the bottom from beige gravel to black sand. Bad idea. I've been washing this gravel for about two hours now, and the water coming out of the bucket I'm washing it in is STILL jet black.

Bottom line, I learned never to pull a stunt like this again, and was left with two questions...

1. How long should I expect it to take for this gravel to get clean?
2. How long can my fish live in the giant tupperware container I have them in (I have a heater, filter, and air set up in it)?

Any thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated!!:confused::confused:

keep washing it trust me i use this black sand and it took a while but in the end it settles also u will get floating sand but its ok once it all settles in you should be fine

What kind of fish? is the tank cycled? whats the filtration? how big is the tank? did you clean the filters?

Honestly, I had no idea the change was going to take this long of a time, so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone, and do a water change at the same time. Have about 50 % of the original water in the bucket, got rid of all but about an inch or two of the rest. I really should have thought this through a lot better....

Senegal Bichir, Ghost Knife, Fire eel, and 1 comet (i know, its just a goldfish but i've had him for 9 months, and he's about 7" now..)

yeah, tank's been running for about 9 months now (carnival strikes again, hence the goldfish) and did a quick rinse of the filter, and put in a new cartridge, but left about 30% of the old substrate
