Most of my tanks have black gravel in them with a black background. Most of the fish show darker color in that setting which I like. The only downside is that it does not bring the color out in my leichardti. The lighting would be a factor as well, but I don't want to spend money on expensive lights if I don't have to....hence the reason why I want to change the substrate/background colors.

So, what colors do you guys use? I was thinking maybe a blue colored sand/gravel with a slightly lighter blue background. I've seen a lot of blue backgrounds on asian aro tanks...usually with no substrate though.

All opinions welcome :D

Well...I've been using foam poster boards for a background lately. They're pretty cheap and they look pretty good, IMO. Why not try pool filter sand? It's cheap and light in color.

I'm really not a fan of sand, but all I'm really looking for is something to better showcase the colors of my fish. The 3m color quartz is actually really nice, it's just a pain in the ass to get...there are no vendors within 100 miles of me. I like the variety of colors they have available too.

I thought about a darker green background with a darker blue substrate. I've read going with a background of any color other than black or blue was awful.

Just wanted color ideas from aro owners who have "show" tanks. I want my fish to show well...all my backgrounds and substrates cause my fish to be on the darker side.

If your not going for sand I'd go with smooth river gravel. Brown and light beige mixed together should give some good reflection off of it. Especially with a Lei who have the reddish color on their scales the reflection helps make it look darker. Plus it gives a tank a nice natural look with a black background and some driftwood. I think that would help set off the Lei's colors.
