Hi,

I have read lots of posts about the types of substrate to use for FH, im staying away from sand as my FH digs and spits a lot.

I currently have a 1cm deep later of white crushed coral, but i was thinking to add more, gravel.

I have a 20 kg bag of white gravel that i was going to add to the coral sand, but how deep?

I have read on a few different sites that 1.5-2 inches is the best depth, but i though i would get some opinions from experts here first.

TIA

I only go 2 inches with gravel easier to gravel vac to remove anything trapped at the bottom. :)

Yes Will gravel added be a different color? Just asking due to the digging of the FH.:)
well the crushed coral is creamy white and the other gravel i have is the same grade but i whiteish grey....so they will be ok mixed together

Will the crushed coral affect the ph in the water?

Oh okay. That seems to be an acceptable range for most cichlids.

Probably will make the PH higher. I use shells in most of my tanks BC the incoming water pH is lower where I live. After a while the shells slowly disappear then I just add more.

Make sure that the pH doesn't get too high in your tank with the crushed coral.

So,the shells dissolve completely?
