Ok so I'll make this a short story. My tank sprung a leak last night(My tank is a 110g 48x18x30). Now I have the opportunity to switch things around. My substrate was just gravel(like some stones from petsmart). I was wondering if I should switch over to a different substrate.

Would my plants benefit? I was wondering if it would be cost effective for a tank my size? Or if I'm just better off using the gravel I have now.

Thanks in advance.

community fish cories, tetras, swordtails, kuhli loaches, dwarf frogs, glass catfish, and snails. I had a undergravel filter going with the tank too.

Well I have 4-54w T5's. So pretty much what ever I can grow with that. Myrio, hornwort, wisteria, ludwigia, moneywort, dwarf hairgrass, microsword narrow leaf, hygrophila kompakt, riccia, moss. Plants like that.

The loaches and other bottom feeders would prob like a coarse sand...goodby undergravel filter. The benifits of sand, IMO, are more than just aestetics. Food and waste dont get trapped as easily, just sits on the top, easily removed. You could even mix the two substrates...try out a couple different things now that you have the opportunity to be creative. I have had many different substrates over the years from very coarse gravel to very fine black sand. The black sand looked awesome but got everywhere, the gravel trapped WAY to much gunk. I have settled on course blasting sand #20 grade and I wont go back to anything else!!!

Hi, would you mind posting some pics of the tank. I also have a 110 gallon with the same dimensions as yours(which is rare) and mine also had a leak which i fixed but still did not setup the tank, just would like to see how yours is set up to give me some ideas, thanks.

My tank ain't setup resealing it right now. Trying to figure out the substrate I want to use. Boldtogether where do you get your substrate?

My main thing is if I get at least a couple bags of whatever I get. I'm not looking to spend alot. Trying to find something that is cost effective.

I have a 160g and (due to cost) the bottom 1.5" or so is Flourite black sand, and the top 1" or so is ADA Amazonia. I don't use any fertilizer and the plants grow great.

If you're doing a planted tank, a substrate designed for plant growth would probably be a good idea... Drsfostersmith.com has a $5.99 ground shipping special going on; you could get some substrate at a good price with cheap shipping.
