I have a Tiger Oscar and i am looking to get the best substrate for him. As of right now i have regular play sand from home depot and it seems to be working fine. I would like to switch to a darker substrate such as black pebbles that you can get from the local petstore. Any ideas on what would be the best Substrate for an Oscar and would those tiny rocks be fine?

Doesn't really matter what you put in, the Oscar will arrange it to his liking. As for color, I've done both and the dark substrate does seem to bring out richer colors.

Anything is probably fine. Black gravel looks better though, IMO, although black sand beats everything. (to bad I can't find any)

i like the black sands... but that gets really expensive in larger tanks the black gravel will work just fine... sometimes it come with like green or red or blue dravel mixed in, so look out for and pick out any you don't want..

i got some black taitian moon sand today from petsmart believe it or not....26 bucks for 20 lbs though

i'd keep it barebottom, just cause oscars are messy pigs
