is it COMPLETELY mandatory to have a sand substrate for Geophagus? Im really interested in getting some but i have small natural gravel

You will see their most natural behavior when kept with sand. You could put a patch of sand in a part of your tank for them as well...

i have had my geo. tapajos and my redhump eartheaters on both regular sand and eco-complete substrate. they do fine on the eco complete but I think the tapajos will spawn again if i move them to the sand substrate tank. I will say their colors are amazing on the darker Eco-complete but, that is just my opinion.

Small gravel is fine for them.
