Need a suggestion for a substrate color to make my rays lighten up (literally) Tank is has a black background with black substrate now. I have had suggestions of mixing in white with the black however as this is a big ordeal I want to try to not F**& it up the first time.

^ Exactly what he said......

Siphon out the black, replace with white sand if you want to wash out/whiten them.....

IF you want the best natural color might wanna give red flint sand a try or add some larger dark colored river rock with the white sand.

Don't forget the HPS or metal halide lights.....

I decided to kick it old school and go with fine gold and band brown river rock. Will take some pics. I remembered I had white when i first got them and migrated to black. May mix in some other colours. Will take some pics. I do have to figure out some lights too as I have been seeing the Metal Halides on ray tanks and I like them!

I have my Wallacei on fine gravel I collected from a local river.
