I was thing of setting my 25g high tank with 1 pair of Leleupi and was wondering how much sand would I need. My plans are to use the Carib Sea Eco complete cichlid zack black. Would a single 20 lb bag be enough. The foot print of the tank is the same as a standard 20 high, Thanks

I just used a bag of Caribsea 20lbs, and I used it in a 20 tall ..it provides a little more than an inch thick of substrate.. might be a tad more...

If you are gonna be planting this tank which you should be for leleupi, because they are herbivors as well as omnivors and plants are a large part of theit diet i would use a 30lbs so you can get a good base for the plants to root in.

I assume we are talking about neolamprologous leluepi, the yellow/orange ones from tanganyika. They are carnivores

If you use a coral based substrate, like aragonite, you will not have to worry about buffering the water above a ph of 8 or higher for them.

+1

I keep & raise Orange Leleupi . They are also called "firecracker" for their bright coloration. I think fine substrate is the way to go. However black is definetly the wrong color for Leleupi. They tend to take on the color of their surroundings. If you use black substrate & a black background your fish will have a dark brownish color instead of a bright yellow or orange. I am speaking from experience. I have kept them in 3 different color substrates. The lighter the substrate the brighter the color of the fish.M ine had the best color with a #3 crushed corol but it is a little too light for my taste. I keep mine in a mixed Hap & Peacock tank with Carib Sea black & white cichlid sand. Their color shows great & they share a 150 gallon tank with a frontosa & 6 synodontis petricolas.:)

Too bad thunderridge had to pipe in with some valid experience. I can't stand when someone is right!

I would have thought that would be an incedible set up with the leleupi and black sand.

Or you could do what I always do which is ask for advice, and do the oppsite, see what happens, and then get mad cause it didn't turn out the way you wanted!!!!
