Substrate for madtom

What would be the recommended substrate for a tadpole madtom? I would like to know if I need to change the substrate in my current native tank.

What do you have right now? They do fine in nearly any substrate as long as it is not abrasive. I'd stick with smooth pea gravel or sand and just give them a few nice hiding spots / caves.

The substrate is quarter sized river rock collected from a stream which is fine for the juvenile bluegill which is in there now. Just would like to know if i need to change it or add an area of different substrate.
