Is sand or gravel a better substrate for plants?

that is a hard question because people have had great planted tanks out of both. but in sand i think you have to use root tabs. so it is really up to you. i have grown plants in sand and plant substrate the plant substrate seemed to make my plants grow better but they did grow in sand. im sure others will have there advice but i think either is going to work.

all preference really. sand is most of the time not going to hold your plants in place as well as gravel which has more weight to each piece. plant gravels most of the time make it easier because you dont have to supplement as many nutrients.

i've always been told gravel but i have plants in both and they seem to grow no matter what.

i just started my tank now and used 2 bags of eco-complete and than added what i wanted over that...it looks nice...its a lil more expensive but from what i hear saves u alot of headache from ferts and not hacving to use root tabs...so i dont know...im a starter to planted tanks just like u but just letting u know what i went with

Thanks for telling me. It's great to get advice from experts but sometimes you need to hear from the little guy:D. I actually probably won't be using "plant substrates" cuz im using a low light setup and they don't really need special substrate.
