Substrate help

I'm getting ready to start my first planted tank and want to use soil as the substrate. Should I add a layer of gravel or some other substrate on top or am I good with just the soil?

Yeah I wasn't sure how the soil would settle especially if I get any cichlids that dig. That's what I was worried about. Any experience keeping dwarf cichlids with just the soil?
