for cleaning purposes i have removed all of the gravel from my tank because i didnt realise how much waste my piranhas would produce. is this ok or should i have some substrate?

.....

Substrate or no substrate is fine. Much easier to clean. I personally always have used sand for my P tanks. I do recommend, however, that if you go with no substrate you should try and add a black background to the tank.

I've read somewhere that since there will be nothing to hide behind, the black background kinda gives them that dark, secure feeling.

I don't know, just a suggestion.

to begin with my rbp's seemed worried at the sight of their own reflections on the bottom of the tank but have calmed down now lol oh and how easy is sand to clean?

if you use sand the poop doesnt sink in, easier to vaccum the filt out
but you should also stir the sand to make sure no nitrates/nitrites are trapped in

I've used both, I personally prefer the look of sand over just the glass, but both are easy to clean. The only thing I noticed is that my Oscars almost seemed to make themselves dizzy swimming on their heads staring down through the glass at the tank underneath! LOL

sand is the best way to go and if your power goes out for a few days you will always have beneficial bacteria backup. bottom line is piranha's are very messy and you will have to clean the tank once a week another suggestion is that you could put somesort of pump at the substrate line and blow the poop around till it get mechanically filtered do it once or twice a week black sand like tahitian moon sand looks amazing with red bellys or with any fish for that matter....

hmmmnn... tahitian moon sand? i was thinking maybe play sand (after thorough rinsing) and remove my fake amazonian biotope background and switch for simply pain black like kevbc03 said ^^^^

another suggestion is tiles as subtrate if its easy maintenance you want
