Just added a baby RTC to my tank a few days ago. He is growing fast and is around 3 inches or so right now. The substrate in the tank right now is def to big for him to be in there seeing as he could probably choke on it. I know bare bottom is probably my best bet but it is just not visually appealling. Would fine sand be a bad idea or should i just not even bother and go bare bottom? thank you:)

Sand is excellent for rtc. :) Never had an issue bare bottom or sand. It's when you have gravel or rocks that are small enough to fit in their mouth that you have to worry. I usually used sand with large rocks that I knew no matter how big they get they can't swallow it. Some of the rocks I had in my tanks and ponds weighed 50-300 lbs each. To give ya an idea of how strong a 2' rtc can be my 2' rtc I use to have actually was able to scoot the 300 lbs rock a little when he was tussling with another fish. :) He wedged himself between it and the wall of the pond and managed to push it. lol

Sand is much better than gravel because its much safer, they wont try to swallow and then choke on sand, but bare bottom is also easier to keep cleaner, at 3in it wont be as hard to keep clean as it will be when he gets bigger

ime sand tends to go threw them.. lol x2 on the sand or bare bottom.. not a fan of barebottom tanks generally.. but you could also use tiles to get a easy to maintain look. I found with only a small amount of sand in my tank.. algae grows like crazy on my bottom between the sand piles. my other tank with our baby rtc hybrid has abit deeper sand and he forages in it for live blackworms all the time. Cliff also brought up a good point... I don't have any decor in my tank that i worry could break the glass if tossed about abit.
