Hey all. I've looked thoroughly through the forums, but couldn't find any info or opinions on the amount and what kind of substrate is good for bichirs.

I'm getting a 75g tank in a week or two and from some of the pics I've seen of other people's tanks, less is more. Does the amount of substrate help? And, is gravel or sand better? I've heard stories of poly's accidentally eating gravel and being unable to pass it, they die. I don't want that to happen. Any ideas will greatly be appreciated.

When you have a planted tank you want a deep bed...When you do not have plants, you are 100% correct..less is more...About 2" for unplanted...3-4" for planted. I would go with sand. Just make sure to gravel vac still to release the trapped gasses.

it is rare, but it happens. so i'd say sand is better (or very fine crushed gravel)

Awesome, thanks! Now, another question, anyone know of a good online retailer for sand? Or, what brand is better?

Woot!!!! You read my mind...black is better. Also, my tank will be acrylic with black background, so it'll all be nice and pro!:D

He is a vendor here...If you need a link, let me know....
