What's up guys and gals? A few quick questions. I have maintained gravel in my tank for years. Mainly due to the fact that gravel is low maintanance, doesn't show poo on the surface, and is fairly easy to clean. However I am thinking about converting the 130 gallon bichir tank to sand. I have seen a lot of tanks with the 3M substrate and it looks great. Those who have it or sand how do you like it? Is it easy to maintain? What grade is the best? Thanks!

U wont get disapointed friend, sand is by far the best looking substrate (my OP).

Im using 0.3-1.0mm sand and i find it very easy to clean. The waste from the fish stays on the surface of the sand untill current/fish movement takes it 2 the pumps intake. Its great substrate as long as u dont have cichlids that digg in the sand, when they do they berry the waste in it and everytime u clean u dont get all the waste because they tend to digg at the same place so the waste comes up again - i hate my tapajos for doin this but anyways.

Me and my friends with bichirs has used 0.3-1.0mm for years now and there has never been a problem when the bichirs accidentaly swallow it, if it goes in it comes out in the other end :D

I used to to have gravel but since i tried sand i just cannot understand why anybody would have gravel, all the debris gets stuck between it and with bichirs there is a danger of swallowing depending on the size,go get that sand.

Agreed with others, sand is great. I use pool filter sand, it's nice and heavy, and even with my juruparis and others digging it doesn't get in my filters. And between my filters and the fish moving around any crap gets stirred around and into the intakes, very easy to keep clean.

i think most people use 3m color quartz, but 3m doesnt make that sand anymore. go with pfs or tahitian moon sand(the black one). pfs is a great alt. to gravel because its heavier than most sand and is able to be cleaned just like gravel.

oh btw pfs is pool filter sand.

ya, colorquartz has been discontinued, but you can still get it. I usually use t-grade now simply because it's a lot better with HOB and canister filters since it doesn't get sucked up as much.
