Rockport, TX
I live on the TX coast, so I am having a tough time rationalizing buying substrate.
I have 3 choices available:
1) local beach sand which is actually fine natural gravel (artificial beach...this was trucked in)
2) Gulf of Mexico beach sand.
3) crushed oyster shell

I think the most interesting, unusual and attractive would be the crushed oyster shell.

What do y'all think?

Thanks

Gulf of mexico beach sand sounds cool after a lot of rinsing and soaking. Hey you should put a ton of that Texas holey rock I pay an arm and a leg for in your tank :)

I am with my friend tcarswell on this for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TX Holey Rock......!!!!!!

Take a drive to Austin...!!!!!!!!!

Get as much as you can... bust it up into smaller sizes if you want... send us what you don't need... hehehe!!!

You are going to be doing Africans....

That was not a question....

TXHR = High PH = Africans!!!!!!!

Good Luck, Let us know when your ready to ship us some and we'll send you "our" addresses!

mm

I should try to take a pic of the crushed coral. My gf has it in her tank. it is really pretty cool. As for the holey rock, that is about a 3 hr drive....but I make it monthly, so all I have to do is find a new housing development!
Wish me luck on that!

New info. Can you use something as fine as sand with an undergravel filter?

A thin layer maybe. Crushed coral would be better for an UGF. Trust me what we pay for holey rock we wish we could drive 3 hours to find some :) shoot id gladly drive 6 hours in my half ton sierra for some driftwood. Us californians get shafted on ornaments.

I just found out there is a "rock yard" less than a mile from here that sell holey rock for $.13/pound. I think for that money I will let them do the driving and collecting. I have a fresh batch to pick from early next week!
