I see many tanks with no substrate at all in them and some with lke sand or gravel.

What's your views and which do you have and why?

Do whatever you want. A bare floor will be much easier to keep clean of course, but i feel that it looks less attractive and i also feel that most fish appreciate a little substrate. If you are worried about keeping it clean, just use a light dusting of sand/gravel. It gives the tank a little something extra :)

Substrate looks better and should be used for some fish types.
Bare bottom makes it much easier to clean.
I have kept JUMBO Central Americans with "just enough" gravel for them to play with.
Also with out substrate things like rocks can crack the bottom glass.

Without substrate its harder if not impossible to keep beneficial bacteria.
And im sure its had to keep all levels right.
IMO.

I have rocks and or sand in all of my tanks

Not if you have a wet/dry filter

I did keep discus for a while bb, and that went on o my other tanks, I now don't keep discus and have substrate in all tanks
