i have 50/50 quazite flourite and i use tropica mastergrow for ferts.

I use Eco-Complete in my 20 gallon, and Soilmaster in my 125. I use Greg Watson dry ferts and mix them myself. If you have a large tank or multipul tanks to dose save yourself some money and buy form Gregwatson.com

Soilmaster $11 for 50lb (2 bags gave me 3" in my 240g)

dry ferts from greg (any tank bigger than a 55g will break you of buying liquid ferts)

I just used gravel when I had a planted, at one pound per gallon of water.

i am using a clay, soil, and sand layered substrate. i have had it running for about 4 months now and have yet to add any ferts(55 gal and 33 gal) and plants are still growing great. and best of all it is dirt cheap. one other plus is the roots love this stuff
when i do fertilize tho it is with seachem, but i am looking to switch to greg watson(i use ferts on my 120 gal)

I have used Flouride and play sand 30 pounds of flouride and 50 pounds of play sand in a 55 gallon and its great, Iv also used eco complete and it works well but you need alot of it.
