It will work but as they get bigger they will kick a lot of it up. Try to find some really coarse sand....
 
wash it reeeeeely well, its really dirty.
 
I'd go with the pool filter sand. I like the color better, but any sand should work fine as long as you are fine with them occasionally kicking some up and as long as it doesn't get sucked in to the filter.
 
sand will eat the rotor of your filter up if it gets sucked up in there so be careful because the bass will kick it up

But it would be a sweet looking tank maybe put a sponge over your filter intake that might help:)
