Substrate?

What seems to be the best color substrate to bring out cichla colors? I would like to run white but worry it would wash them out?

This is truly a matter of opinion. But darker color substrate in my experience makes the fishes colors stand out better.

White will certainly wash their colors out. Anything dark (black looks the best by far IMO). I had white sand in my cichla tank before switching to black, look like completely different fish after. My view is if you are going to spend the money on rare or WC fish, should provide the best environment to highlight their patterns.

For cichla i like to paint all but the veiwing pannel black.
