I have noticed alot of people on here seem to keep their fish without substrates do gar show any ill effects health wise if they are kept without a substrate?

John

most fish tanks are nicer without subtrates makes cleaning that much easier. also depending on the flow in the tank waste will never settle and you bottom. I keep bar bottom reef tanks and the bottom eventually gets covered in coraline algae. The only time i worry about putting any thing down is when i am growing stuff in it aka plants or when i have fish that burrow.

it will be fine for the gar. i prefure sand myself, like the more natural look. dont have any problems with waste settling in it cause it is tightly packed together. here is on of my tanks for example.
