So i have a 55 that i have set up for two peackock bass. The last thing i need to do is put substrate. I waited because i wasnt sure what would be best. What are some advantages for some of the different subtrates and what would be best for peackock bass. I was thinking either gravel, sand or nothing.

BTW the 55 is not permanent for them

I would go sand or none. No really a gravel guy, barebottom makes it easy to clean and sand gives a more natural look if you decorate appropriately. But sand does look good on it's own as well. It all comes down to personal preference in the end, what do you think looks best?

I personally think sand looks better but wasn't sure if it was easy to maintain. How would I maintain it and what do I have to do to it before I put it in my tank?

Gravel is a PITA to clean. Sand is super easy to clean as you just spot the poop and scoop it up since it doesnt get under sand.

For cichla id probably paint the back and bottom of the tank black and go barebottom!

Rinse sand thoroughly until the water runs clear (this could take awhile). Any detritus will settle on top sand so you can siphon just the top. I also will gravel vac my sand, but not letting it go all the way to the top so I don't lose too much sand.

I hope you have a bigger tank ready for those peacocks. They won't be in the 55 for long.

Alright so after reading i decided to get some black sand. its in the tank and the bass are settling in. And i know they wont last in the 55. i am planning on getting a bigger tank but they are good for now since they are only like 3 inches.

Love gravel here. But a total P.I.T.A to clean everyweek
But the natural look is totally worth it.
