I was just wondering if anyone has ideas for what to put in with a red devil. Has anyone has experience with a red devil and found a fish that wont die right away from the red devil's attacks? My red devil attacks me when I try to give it food, and if I put my fingers to close to the tank he jumps out at me :devil:. This is why I was wondering if I am stuck trying to keep my tank clean with snails or something of that nature. Thanks.

depends on the tank size, rd's can be territorial as with most fish, but not neccerially out for blood, if you are indeed keeping it in a 20gal, (though you said it was a joke), then your screwed, first of all you rd has already outgrown that tank, and needs a tank with a 4'x18" minimum footprint on the way soon. second of all anything you put in a tank that small, will be in very close proximety to it, so it will have no other choice then to defend it's terriotory and kill that fish, if your tank had a 6'x18" footprint the story would be different, becuase there would accually be room to swim around in for the fish. but if you do plan to upgrade to some thing with at least a 6 foot length, then the chance of keeping other fish with it rise highly., but as i suspect, your a young kid who really just posted this topic to show of that you 5" red devil is aggresive, because you think that's cool, so i guess you really don't care for the facts, and to answer your question fully, with a large tank, you could problaby keep, fish such as texas's, gt's, and other medium-large sized cichlids with it.

Depending on the size of your tank(?) plecos will do just fine with a Red Devil. I have a 2 Red Devils in different tanks with plecos and they do just fine.

well you could try breeding 2 of them! but then sometimes females will be killed!

i personally have never tried it but u could try a male jad with the rd! then you would need at least a 180! but the jag should definetly not die! unless one grows too fast!

but hey you could keep a 5foot Rd by itself!

5'=5feet

5"=5inches

While this is good advice XR you should probably mention what size you consider to be a large tank. The average person thinks a 55 gallon tank is huge. In my experience you would need at least a 240 gallon tank to house a red devil with any other type of cichlid and this is still hit or miss. I put a 2 inch red devil / midas in my 135 w/ 2 oscars and a green terror that were bigger by about an inch and he had 75 % of that tank roped off as his by daybreak. And these were just little baby fish in a 6 foot tank. I think RD's are best kept singly as a wet pet. They make awesome pets and with a 90 gallon or bigger you could try your hand at a large pleco w/ him. Also, I think it's just a joke but if you really are keeping those fish in a 20 gallon maybe you should think of upgrading soon.

I wonder how big it is now...3 months later? Hopefully it's still not in that 20gallon:(

that is not always the case.. we bought a tank with a red devil and a flowerhorn and a pleco in it.. the flowerhorn was sick, so the red devil left it alone, but the pleco had all his fins torn up.. he was a MESS..

we nursed the flowerhorn back to health and sold her, and we sold the red devil and the other RD that we got with the other tank as a pair, and we still have all the plecos with nice healthy normal fins and no one eating them for lunch anymore.
