I have a 7 inch female GT in a 120 gallon with a 12 inch Oscar and a 5 inch juvy Oscar. They have been together for a couple of weeks with no trouble. The big Oscar "herds" the others around on occasion, but no attacks. All of a sudden tonight, my GT has taken over half the tank. If the big Oscar swims to her side, she goes at him. They have locked up a couple of times and she has pushed him to the other side. Is it possible she has laid eggs in the gravel and is defending them? How often do they lay eggs? Should I give the GT a flower pot to hide in? Things were going so well for a couple of weeks. Any thoughts?

Either the eggs thing or at 7" she is possibly starting to reach maturity and realizing that she's not taking your O's BS bullying anymore.

Look around, have you seen any eggs?

I agree, though she might only be getting ready to lay.I have found them to acert their domanance before they lay.
:)

She is almost 3 years old, so I think she is already mature. I did move her to a 55 gallon this morning with a juvi tex and juvi JD. (They have caves too small for her in which to hide). She had the big Oscar in the corner of the tank and was seriously attacking him. She totally ignored the juvi Oscar. I haven't noticed eggs, but I just have gravel. She has been digging holes and hanging out near there. Will she do better with a JD or Texas than an Oscar?

so y did you take her out of the 120?

Yeah, if they're not causing major damage to each other, sometimes you have to let them determine the pecking order in their own cichlid way of doing things.

She was trying to kill him, that's why.

I had a GT with My Os for over a year and never had a problem. Then one day the GT became a complete terror. It dominated them to the point I had to give it to a friend. Thats the problem (if you want to call it that) once they reach maturity they can become real BMF's.

the big oaf might have eaten her eggs, she could f just got pissed and started to whoop on him, or yea almost ready to lay eggs.
if she is close to laying eggs you should see a egg tube. (by her poo hole) :)
