This fish is showing classic signs of Pop-eye which is a symptom of an underlying internal baterial infection. It is a build of fulid behind the fishes eye. If you don't act quickly the fish could loose the eye or end up blind.

Bacterial infections, poor water quality and injury are the most common causes the 1st two usually go hand in hand. Some of the other symptoms of this that may not always be present are bubbles under the fish's skin which may be what I think you're seeing around the area.

This fish should be treated in a seperate tank. If you don't have a hospital tank then I would recomend doing a large water change of 50+% and add Epsom salts one tbsp per every 5 gallons of water to draw the fluid out. This sounds like a bacterial infection. Try a gram negative antibiotic such as Maracyn or Kanamycin as a good first choice. follow the directions on the package.

While treating you must keep the water very clean. Follow the directions on the meds and when you do a water change replace the meds and Epsom salt to maintane the necessary levels. You must keep the fish's environment as clean as possibile at all times or this infection will return. GL

Thanks for the replies, it helped a lot. I already removed him to hospital tank, and gave him antibiotic from oral way. Now the heat is 27 degrees and i added a pipe filter with an internal filter.

Sorry to hear that. You have alot of time invested in a red terror at that size. I was going to suggest the 2 50-75% waterchanges a day and the epsom salt treatment listed above for 3-4 weeks.

The infection might have been systemic and too advanced by the time you started treatment. That looks nasty. If anything like this ever happens don't wait to start treatment. I'm very sorry I couldn't have been more hepl I feel bad about it.

What a loss....sorry.

Sorry, it is always hard to lose a big nice fish.
Based from experienced, I noticed that big ca/sa cichlids seems to response better with metronidazole + salt during critical bacterial sickness. The metro is to fight the infection while the salt helps them breathe better. Lots of aeration would also help in their hospital tank.

Thanks for your condolences. In fact i started treatment exactly when you mention the treatment ways. But the infection or what so ever it is, act very fast.
