My nitrates have always been between 5 an 10 ppm...all of a sudden they have spiked up to 40ppm possibly more it's hard to tell. This happened within 2 days. Would a dead fish cause a spike in nitrates but not nitrites and ammonia? Those are both 0. I have seen things that may be parts dead fish and I have an unacounted for striped peacock eel, but that is not unusual to not find him sooo.I have done gravel vac and water changes 4 out of the last 5 days trying to get this down. I have changed 25,20,20,and 15 in my 90 gallon...should I try more? What else would cause this to happen so fast?

Those water changes should have lowered the nitrates, although the source of the problem may still exist. I would check your water supply to see if it changed.

It may be that your tap water has nitrate in it. Test that.
