Hi guys

I have this supposedly breeding pair of Jags that is about 5+" in a 50g tank. Sometime in November of 2006 they laid eggs, and as expected, read and told, all the eggs appeared to be golden in color the first day, and both the fish took turns in fanning the eggs, then the next day a few eggs turned white, and within the next 24 hours or so, the eggs started to disappear and soon they were all gone. I thought this was due to their inexperience, and they will do a better job next time around.

Well, it's more than 2 months since, and what I see now puts me in a fix. This pair has managed to clear the gravel from the front corner of the tank about 4" square, as they did earlier too. But unlike last time around, they are now engaged in a fierce war. Half the time I see their jaws locked, splashing water all around the tank. And, still no eggs !!

1. Is it possible that I have two females instead of a breeding pair ? (that would be the worst thing to happen)
2. Is it that one of them is not in mood to breed ? If so, can anything be done about it ?

Any guesses what's going on ? :(

Have you sexed them yourself?
Turn up the heat in your tank.

my 12"'s just started breeding,

1st things first, youll soon need to upgrade to a larger tank, mine are in a 125, and i'm looking to get a 180 for them,

2nd thing, it is most likely the male wants to breed agian and the female is not willing to, that is poroblby the cause of the jaw locking

also please post pics of the jags to confirm identification

and you probly will want to get a divider for them if the female doesn't want to breed, males do kill them time to time

Try the divider with a hole if the size difference is enough that the male won't fit through. When the female's ready, she'll go to his side.

When my jag was about the same size as yours he always seemed to be breeding with a smaller female but I never saw any eggs. I had a pleco about the same size as the male jag in the tank that was apparently eating the eggs. He was big and bold enough to push the jags around and force his way into their flowerpot. Once I removed the pleco I got a huge batch of fry the next time they bred.
