I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good pumps that would work for small ponds? I currently have four 100 gallon stock tanks in my basement with fancy goldfish and/or as grow-outs for common goldfish. I am looking to upgrade their filtration before the weather warms up this spring. I have a wonderful tetra canister filter & pump that I'm very happy with, but I have no intention of paying for what ammounts to a 5 gallon bucket with some fittings when I can VERY easily make one myself. However, I do still need a pump - preferably something powerful, because if you know goldfish, you know how messy they are.

The pump I'm looking for should be:
- Relatively cost effective. I don't need something super fancy, I don't need UV sterilizers built in or any of the other stuff I've seen online.
- A high GPH
- Able to handle the mess of goldfish without getting clogged easily.

depending on which Tetra canister you have or what you are going to make will have alot to do with it. Some of the "5 gallon bucket" style filters are pressure rated and reguire a pump with substantial head pressure capability where some other are more circulation, bio and some mechanical. I like Mag Drive pumps for applications that require good flow, they are submersible and compact just not great on pressure applications.

I use the Tetrapond 1900 model. It is really powerful. As it is submersible i can't hear the pump running but I sure can hear the water. Too much flow for your goldfish probably. I had it on a 600 gallon pond and my diy waterfall filter was DEAFENINGly loud. Now my pond is smaller cause my mother tripped out about how much water was in the house.

I drilled holes in the output to increase underwater currents and decrease the flow to the filter cause i didn't want hearing damage from the falling water which used to be too loud to have a conversation over. My 1 1/4 inch tubing has like 30 holes in it and that really stirs up what is now more like 150 gallons. So far it's been going 3 months no problems and dealt fine with pacu sludge. It also did not get clogged when a lot of plastic shavings went through it that I carelessly let fall in the pond. (from drilling holes in the tubing). I found them in my polyester filter material the next day.
