hey guys
I'm new to this forum and I'de like to learn as much as possible about the arowana.
I will be purchasing a 225 gallon aquarium later this month, dimensions will be 72x24x30.
Yes it is high but I will enjoy this hight very much I think.
Anyway. I was hoping to find some help on things to read. I will read everything I can on the net, but I would like to learn a lot more about their natural habitat, eating habits, nutrients to feed them, etc. I would also like to know if this size aquarium I chose will be sufficient in size for them. Please let me know.
Thanks!
Hope to hear from you all soon!

also i was wondering something else
what kind of foods would i be able to feed an arowana so that i'de be keeping the fat intake down?
i JUST read that the fat content is why some arowana have drooping eyes as if they're staring at the bottom of the tank
is more life feeding a solution to this?
i'm extremely curious and cant seem to read enough right now.. i've gotta go out and get some books or something

reducing fat content does not prevent drop eye

the cause of drop eye is unknown, as every theory has its flaw.

if you get it then you get it and you cant do a dang thing about it.

i need to revise that damn sticky

with the dimensions reverse the length and width

make the height 24'' and the width 30''

i would have wrote more but i had to go to work :)

for habitat its pretty ugly to the average fish keeper, The silver arowanas usually inhabit the flooded rainforests, so tree trunks, sand bottom, and dead leaves, not as exciting as you would think, so the best set-up for these guys are a sandy bottom afew river stones here and there, maybe some low laying bog wood.

if it was me id have a black bottom and back wall.

you dont need to worry about eating habits, they feed at the surface.

your tank sze will suffice, maybe for life, but the ideal size would be 8'Lx3'Wx2'H

oh i'm looking at a black bottom.. gonna be using volcano dust?.. it's the consistency of crushed coral anyway.. and i'm going to have LOTS of driftwood and rocks.. unfortunately i think this may be where my arowana will have to accept that he's in a different environment though.. i'm going to be using LOTS of plants.. i like that waterfall thing i saw that an aquascaper did.. maybe something along those lines.. i enjoy aquascaping.. so hopefully it's something pretty kool..
i like plants so my arowana will have to deal with plants, i like driftwood.. so same thing there.. and rocks.. well.. gotta find just the right ones
AAAAAAnyhow.. i talk too much let's here more from you guys and gals!
oh.. i'll be going with a gold or red.. maybe a green.. have to see as time progresses... but heavily on red.. i like red arowanas.. i dunno.. maybe i'm wierd or something

If I were setting up a new tank for an aro, I would consider using under gravel (sand in the case of aros) jets. All it is is a loop of pvc pipe laid on the tank floor with pieces of
1/2" pipe tee'd off the loop. The open ends of the pieces of 1/2" pipe are heated and mashed together making a "jet". Hook the loop up to a pump, and hide the whole thing with substrate. The idea is to create a current off the bottom to keep waste suspended in the water column, so it can be removed by filtration. In other words, no more vacuuming! This means less fiddling around in the tank freaking out your fish. Sorry, I get carried away by this stuff.:grinyes:

trust me

as long as you give the fish open spaces to swim, it could care less how you decorate it.

you getting a silver? Awakening of the Dragon is the best aro book out there, at least for asians. but even if you keep a silver, im sure youll enjoy drooling over the best arowana pics in the world, contained in that book. i have a copy myself...
