Hey guys,

I just purchased a 48" light fixture with a basic light. What do you guys think of using a coralite actinic blue t5 bulb for pygo nats? I was thinking the blue light will definitely be dimmer for the shoal rather than a bright basic light. If no, should I keep the regular light or go with a 50/50 actinice/reg light? Any suggestions will help and be really appreciated! Plus will post pics of my new tank tom!

Just cuz the lites blue doesn't mean the fish interpret the same color, all lites have different K and wavelengths, you may experience some algae with that bulb. Why not a simple led strip, my 12-18" double bright marineland works fine on my 125. It's just enough plus no replacing bulbs and less watts consumed!

The actinic lighting is more for reef stuff. Like F1 said the kelvin/wavelengths are different. Plants use a different certain wavelengths and reefs utilize other wave lengths.

As far as using it purely for color, i dont think rbp would look good in blue lights. Id get 6500-6700k rated bulbs and just dim them. Have you ever considered floating plants like water lettuce or red root floater to soak up nutrients and dim the tank? (Fast growing plants like floating plants eat up the phosphates and nitrates out of the water better than algae, so the algae gets out competed for nutrients and doesnt grow)

Thanks mike I will just use the reg light til I update to a led light. Plus, I'm going to definitely look into this floating plants; that might be a very good move. Thx to both for the great suggestions.
