I had a problem recently with green water (look at single cell algae!! AHHHHGGG!!! also in the general discussion forum) which I'm not sure now if it actually was single cell algae. Basically I think it was caused by the water conditioner I was using and did a full water change and never plan on using the water conditioner again. I copied and pasted this for you if it helps.

:clap :grinyes: I am so happy. I did a 50% water change on friday and the water was still green so I got really pissed and did a full water change, well more like a 95% water change. The water was so low the fish were literally laying on thier sides. It is now Monday (3 days later) and absolutely no reoccurance of green water.

On the flip side I'm having doubts as to whether it was actually single cell algae. I remembered that I bought some water conditioner ( I don't remember the name) a couple of months ago and when I used it my water started to turn green so I did a 50% water change right away and it was gone. I think I used it again right before I started having this problem.

So I think that the conditioner is the root of the problem. There are Probably two senario's.
  1. The chemicals in the conditioner react with my tap water (or something in my tank) to turm the water green
  2. The conditioner creates a situation that promotes alge growth

dump about a cup of Diatomaceous Earth into your tank... if you have an overflow filter or wet/dry sump, dump directly into your filter.. ...if you have a canister filter.. dump it right by your output.

DE can be obtained at any pool supply for significantly less than at the LFS, which will display it as "diatom powder" ..it goes for about $28 a lb. at my LFS... $8 for a 10lb bag at the pool supply...

DE works as a water buffer, helps breakdown fish waste, and for the record, I ran a 90 gallon tank next to a large window for over a year and I never grew any algae ever. it's going to cloud over your tank.. it will look like milk. In about 3 or 4 hours you'll have crystal clear water. It's good for the fish, (cleans the gills!) and incredible for the water.

..it also kills ants in your yard.. ...just ram a stick into the ant hill, dump a cup in the hole, then stab it a few more times.. the DE will stick to the ants exoskeletons and eat them alive.

and for the record.. the only "chemicals" I ever used in my tank was Stress Coat.
