So My planted tank is doing well moving its course to a sweet spot... :naughty:

However my snails are getting a little annoying as they tend to get. I was thinking about getting a loach to help control the population.IMG_20120323_215414.jpg

The tank is a 40 gallon breeder whose residents are two Senegals one 7"ish the other 4"ish, and two rope fish both about 9-10"ish. Filtration is high. Plenty of cover as in the picture...

I only want to get 1 or 2 depending on the fish not more, and would like it to be large or aggressive enough not to be eaten by the Senegal but not hurt it.

What would you get/ suggest?

I want to keep the snail population low but not eradicate them.

Thank you everyone! :nilly:

Throw 2 slices of fresh cucumber in the tank on both sides, let sit for a couple hours then net out, cucumbers are snail magnets, easy cheap way to control population!

They are trumpet snails, which is why I don't wanna get rid of all of them...

That's sorta what I do now lol I'm just trying to get an excuse for that "one more fish" lol

I thought about the puffer but I'm worried they might nip at the polys and the whole brackish water thing turns me away... might look into the cichlids you said...

I was thinking maybe 1 blue botia? Any other fish suggestions?

some puffers can adjust to freshwater , i've kept a firgure 8 puffer my cousin in my tank for like 3 or 4 years till i found out it was a brackish fish then set up a brackish tank with some catfish n shortly after it died sadly. i've only ever seen my green terrors eat snail i've never kept any snails before so when i got them they reproduced and one of the parents got eaten . so i returned both to my lfs , then when their eggs hatched all were eaten but 1 that i've seen so far

If you don't want to get rid of all of them, a good way to control them is to net them. The snails come to the surface when the lights are out to give birth. You can net the tiny young with a shrimp net at the surface of your tank as you see them and you can also get the ones that are crawling along the sides. I only turn on my lights when I get home from work in the late afternoon and there are usually still many babies floating along the top. I net these and put them in my cichlid and clown loach tank for snacks. This will control the population significantly over time but you must be dilligent.

I have tried assasin snails but they don't seem to work or they work too slowly. Bolivian rams will eat snails, my young JD eats them, abantids like gouramis and bettas will also eat them but don't expect them to control the population because the snails breed too quickly. I think netting them works pretty well.

asellus puffers. They max out at about 3 inches, eat snails, are peaceful, are full freshwater, and have great personalities. They do better in groups, too. 3 would be great for your tank.

Cool, thanks people. So I'm going to keep netting and look into the puffers. Probably choose between them or a loach.
