I purchased 6 hillstream loaches (5 are Beaufortia kweichowensis) then one I am not sure the id.
I have them housed with 4 Corydoras Fowleri and a bunch of amano shrimp I was wondering if anyone could suggest some mid to upper level swimming fish that would be good with these?

Also any one who has kept the hillstream loach what makes them happy I have been reading allot of varied information on them about temp requirements they are in a 39 gal tank and are all juveniles at the moment the current temp is about 72 f I figure either 70-72 would be ok not positive because I read one place that 70 could be to warm so WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK??

I think they need tank mates that will not pick on them and I think the amano shrimp are aggressive enough with the whole food thing so it would prob need to be a mellow fish???? NOTHING NIPPY!!

White clouds, I had mine in with goldfish..

How cold is the water i it's cold enough try icefish.. j/k are those even avaliable?

Are Hillstream Loaches cold water?

About being cold water:

All the info I have found says yes and a few peolple who have kept them say yes although there are cases were people have kept them short periods of time in warmer water

I was told that goldfish put out to many nitrates to be very good with the hillstream but possibly in a overly large tank lightly stocked since they need high oxegen levels.

:) Thanks for the suggestions everyone

More Welcome :D

Sticklebacks tend to be nippy
You also need to remember that there are several species, some tolerate higher temps than others, several prefer temps in the mid 70s. the chinese ones tend to like cooler waters than the ones from Borneo and Malaysia. The punctalatus likekes temps around 75 and that is pretty normal for Malaysian hillstreams. I have kept them with small spiney loaches, medaka, guppies, white clouds ans several types of small shiner and for a while with some pygmy sunfish, never had a problem, it is not so much that they get picked on as that they get out competed for food.

Buenos Aries tetras, rosy barbs, paradise fish, white clouds, Florida flagfish, dojo loaches, redline barbs (denisonii), etc., are several species that do well in subtropical temperatures.

We're talking Hong Kong Pleco, right? B/C I was sold one and told like 78 deg, it died after couple months.

One thing about these fish is that they require high O2 levels and prefer a current.

Any of the common Danio species should do fine. Spotted Danio look like mini sized Brook Trout (to me anyway) and I think they would really fit in to a stream setting .
