Hi all
I'm new here but not to fishkeeping, just had a break for a few years.
At some point over the next month or two I'm going to be collecting a 7-8" gibbiceps from one of my customers (I'm a dog behaviourist by trade and got nattering about her hefty goldfish in its 30" tank last time I saw her, she's got a miserable looking gibbi too so I'm having both and the goldfish is going in my pond).
At present I have a 48" x 12" x 15" setup, right now my goldfish are in it as I'm having to do some work on my pond but once they go back out I'll be redoing it as tropical. I'm already on the lookout for an upgrade too, as I'm well aware how big the gibbi will get! He's been a bit stunted so far I think - titchy tank of course and he was sold as a coldwater fish so he's been in an unheated tank for close to 7 years
But I digress. When I had fish before I went for large barbs and catfish - my last setup had hoplos, bumblebee cats (siamese and south american), a sun cat, two big plecs, clown barbs, gold barbs, two unIDd barbs (looked just like tor soro but stopped growing at 10") and a shoal of seven lemon fin barbs (hypsibarbus wetmoreii).
This time around I'm looking for something big but with an adult size of around 12-15" I think. I'm pondering flagtail prochilodus or distichodus sexfasciatus but I'm not that familiar with either - I understand prochs are better solo if they can't be in a big shoal, can anyone confirm that?
What I'm toying with doing is having one or two big fish and a couple of big shoals of smaller barbs, most likely clowns and golds again as I love them! And probably hoplos again, along with the gibbi.
Can anyone suggest some other possibilities? Not a fan of cichlids at all btw! I'll be looking at probably a 5' x 2' x 2' tank at most I think. I'll not get whatever I get until I've got the larger tank in place so I've got plenty of time to ponder and choose
