I've had problems in the past with live plants. the water got greenish and there were broken off pieces all over the place. it got way too dirty.

I would definitely try Live plants again. The pros outweigh the cons by a mile! Java fern would be a good first plant, or you could try Anarchis or a combination of both

Live plants and driftwood.

fill the tank up. black background. remove fake plants. get small driftwood. also live plants like the others said. try for only 8 hours 10 hours max a day will cut down the chance for algae.
