I know it's not really monster.... but it's all I could get upstairs into my new house :)

I want to try something new having spent a good 15 years keeping general community fish and I would like to move into keeping a bigger cichlid or a group of medium sized ones

I can see that my tank isn't really large enough for the big boys, but I'm after some suggestions of what I could keep in this tank?!

Firemouths? how many? just a pair?
1 GT?
(I spotted electric blue JD as my LFS yesterday... nice!)

A bit of colour would be nice but isnt the be all and end all, I think i would much prefer something with personality that I can sit and watch while the missus watches endles hours of rubbish on TV :)

Ideally i would like to keep whatever I chose with a group of clown loaches (I have a new DIY build for a 100gal(ish) tank on the go so they have something to move into long term ((I'm just starting the cabinet build so will stick a thread up for that))

P.s I'm based in the UK if that makes much difference.....

Thanks

MC

Just for clarification, is the 63 a temp set up while you build the 100gal? If so then you have a lot more options than you do with the 63.

Do you want a single fish, a pair, or a community? Are there any particular big cichlids that appeal to you? Sometimes you can find something somewhat similar in a smaller species...

I've been looking about at the weekend.....

I'm tempted by a group of Firemouths - could I fit a group of say 6-8 in my tank or is it asking for trouble?

The tank is 48 x 16 x 22 (give or take half an inch)

That's the perfect size tank for a pair of firemouths. Coincidentally, the best way to obtain a pair is to buy 6-8 juveniles and let pairs naturally form.

Now, people often keep firemouths in groups. IMO/IME, in that size tank, you would probably only want a pair as adults. But, you probably have at least a year before you'd have to move the other fish. You may very well get multiple pairs as well. I think it's a great stock idea and one of my favorite "common" species and I think you should go for it.

Sounds positive then. It's a fish i've always liked as I remember my dad keeping some when I was growing up :)

Plants and decor will be finished this week and then I'm nearly ready to rock and roll! WOO

Thanks for the replies.
