I've just picked up a tenecor 90gal (60"x18"x20") acrylic sump to go with my 450 tank. The top compartment was A LOT shallower then I had though. I would have typically placed filter floss in this area together with japanese Mat but I doubt I'll be able to put very much in there. Currently there is only the black sponge that came with it....any suggestions on what to do and or put in place of filter floss?

I've got 2" of space from top of sump to drip tray. An option I think I can do is remove some bioballs and place the jap mat and sponge underneath the drip tray and only put in the filter floss in the 2" space?

Here's a pic....

I have the same style of sump. I just put the pink filter media that you can get off of Ebay. My tank stays really clean.

So this brings up a good on topic question do we need this Matala Mat? does it help with mech filtering?. I was going to buy a 3 pack for 30 bucks, It was 1.5" thick and in three types

Green-Medium Density,
and Black-Low Density filter mats.

However I have been doing just fine with the bonded blue filter pads.
