I have a 40 gallon tank, with a fluval 206 canister filter. I had 1 oscar and 2 jack dempseys in it, (needless to say that didn't work out). I'm a beginner at fish keeping, but i love it, and i am looking to maybe put aggressive fish in my tank, not 100% sure yet on what i want to do, but im cleaning out my tank this weekend and am trying to decide what to put in my tank, any suggestions? I want a fish that isnt going to be too hard for a beginner to take care of, i'm open to any suggestions, like i said i dont know if i for sure want to do cichlids/aggresive fish again, just an idea. Thanks!

Mbuna? not in a 40g. Try german rams or apistos. I would probably do a colony of shell dwelling tangs but you would need different substrate and deco. Convicts would be fine if 2 fish is all you wanted to keep.

I would like to keep more than just 2 fish in the tank if at all possible, are there any cichlids that i could keep a good number of them in there? if not I would be okay with just a couple. Just some thoughts!

A 40 gal is very small, if you want to keep more than 2, only the smaller cichlids should be considered.
If you want South Americans, a group of 1 male and 3 females of the smallest Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys group might work.
below Gymno sp quilero

If you'd prefer Central Americans, as others have stated above, 4 of the smallest Cryptoheros genus might work
below, one of the smallest of the genus Cryptoheros,
C nanoluteus

In nature a pair of Jack Dempseys hold a territory about the size of an SUV, a 40 gal is about the size of a rut in the road, not a condemnation of your tank, just a reality.

The rock above, where the middle JD is chasing the lower individual from, is about the size of a car.
The JDs ignore the live bearers at the surface (other than eating the ones they catch) but chase all other cichlids away.

Yeah I totally understand, I wish I would've gotten a bigger tank but too late now, if I kept firemouths or 5 star generals do y'all think I could only keep 2? Just trying to understand how much room different fish need etc.
