I have a 40 gallon tank, with a fluval 206 canister filter. I had 1 oscar and 2 jack dempseys in it, (needless to say that didn't work out). I'm a beginner at fish keeping, but i love it, and i am looking to maybe put aggressive fish in my tank, not 100% sure yet on what i want to do, but im cleaning out my tank this weekend and am trying to decide what to put in my tank, any suggestions? I want a fish that isnt going to be too hard for a beginner to take care of, i'm open to any suggestions, like i said i dont know if i for sure want to do cichlids/aggresive fish again, just an idea. Thanks!

First cycle. Then maybe convicts. Or mbuna cichlids, Fire mouths.

Most of the Cryptoheros species would work, or a salvini, port cichlids, basically anything that stays below that 5-6" mark.
A pair of five star generals if you want aggressive, a few firemouths and tetras if you want less aggressive.
Firemouths would work. They will display to each other which gives the illusion of aggression.

African cichlids would be the only way to have a lot. Aside from that, convicts are your best bet

A 40 gal is very small, if you want to keep more than 2, only the smaller cichlids should be considered.
If you want South Americans, a group of 1 male and 3 females of the smallest Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys group might work.

The rock above, where the middle JD is chasing the lower individual from, is about the size of a car.
The JDs ignore the live bearers at the surface (other than eating the ones they catch) but chase all other cichlids away.

Yeah I totally understand, I wish I would've gotten a bigger tank but too late now, if I kept firemouths or 5 star generals do y'all think I could only keep 2? Just trying to understand how much room different fish need etc.
