I have a pond thats around 300g and i was wondering if you guys had any recommendations on heaters or deicers. I live in upstate NY so it gets pretty cold up here at an average of 20F during the winter. Pond is 3 1\2 ft. at the deepest part and about 18in in the shallow part.

I have to move a handful of boulders around the falls to prevent to much splashing. Other than that I run it year round and w/o any problems. I used a cow trough heater the first year. Went to Palms Springs for a week and came home to a fried out heater and solid pond. lost $145.00 dollars worth of imported Koi and now do away w/the heater. Another easy approch is to use a small (couple hundred gph) pump placed on some bricks or platform just below the surface. If you have a skimmer, you can add a few fitting and pipe to route it out to the front of the skimmer. This will keep an area free of ice. One more, a large (3-4") air stone w/a large air pump. I have never tried or seen this done, but seems like it would work.

We don't have so much cold around here like yours but when necessary we use empty pvc bottles, attached to each other by a rope and floating on the surface. But don't know how strong is your icy season.

im pretty sure just water flow will not keep it from freezing here. we have a few water big water falls up here that freeze so im sure that just a pump wont keep it from freezing. gets pretty cold sometimes.

Chicagoland is exactly warm in January and Feb.
