Hello,

I currently own a 48"x12"x15" tropoical freshwater aquarium containing the following fish:

  • 1x5" Synodontis nigrita
  • 2x1" spoted Red Hooks
  • 2x4." & 1x3" Red Hooks
  • 6x2" congo tetras.
The congos are almost 4 years old and I understand that their life expectency is between 4-6 years. When they eventually die I am undecided whether to either increase the number of red hooks or replace the congos with another fish(s). Please can you offer some suggestions as to what I could do?

The tank is decorated with wood and a lot of plastic plant.

I will try and upload a photo of the aquarium if that would help.

How about some Rainbow fish or Red-Lined Sharks?

Personally, i like congos, so i would just get more :) But that is just me.

However, 2 things about your post stand out to me:

1. I think congos can live more than 6 years if cared for properly - i had a pair of males for at least 4 years, and they were over 3 inches when i got them, and at least 2 years old, so i would not expect yours to die very quickly

2. the fact that your 2 year old congos are only 2 inches long seems odd to me. The ones i got to replace the aboved mentioned pair were almost 3 inches long after i had them for only around 6 months. How frequently do you change water? I would be worried if mine were only 2 inches after 4 years.

Anyway, good luck!

Hello,

Thank you for your suggestions. I am making every effort to make them live and grow to their full potential. I am just planning ahead.

The congos and catfish were moved over from a 30"x12"x15" to my current 48"x12"x15" a couple of years ago. I do like the Red Line Torpedo barbs but I will not have enough space to give them a large enough shoal.

i would add more congos if it were me...

I don't know if red-lined sharks are the same as Roseline sharks but if so, go for those!
