For the past three months I have been deployed. During this time, I had someone watch the house and animals for me. In my back yard, in have a free roaming 10" sulcata. About a month ago, my friend informed me that my tortoise went missing, and he assumed it was stolen. Well, I got home yesterday and began investigating. I found a deep burrow that can easily accommodate the tortoise. The recent weather also leads me to believe he/she dug to get out of the triple digit heat. How do I go about removing the tort from the burrow? I considered digging, but I don't want to risk collapsing the burrow, and it looks like it might go deep and far enough to go into the neighbors yard. I've googled for quite a while and also browsed tortoise forums. Any ideas?

I've had to do this while moving during winter when they were hibernating. The had dug the burrow under my concrete slab so digging them or want an option. Slowly fill the hole with water, they will come out. Keep a close eye on them to make sure they are not stuck in the hole and they will come out.

Are you sure he's in there? It's over 100 everyday at my house and they come out every evening. How long had it been since he was seen? Try a piece of pvc pipe with a cap on the end, of you poke him you should be able to feel him move.
