Hello,

I have a 55gallon tank, that has been up since end of september. It houses 9 danios, 9 neons, 3 queen loaches, 2 cory cats and my pride and joy- an L264 and an L75.

My water levels are great. 0- ammonia and nitrites, nitrates <20. However, over the last 2 months I've lost 1 cory cat, 3 danios and 3 tetras. The cory was first- it was small, and lost the ability to swim normally. It had a scar by its dorsal fin and had stopped growing, so i had hoped/thought it was from damage, not illness. the last danio was to dropsy. The others, i don't know, as I dorm during the week and they were fine one weekend, and dead the next. So I decided to do a half-dose of melafix, in hopes that that and even more frequent water changes will prevent any more deaths.

I dosed the first time on sunday- 2.5 teaspoons (it called for 5.5), once more monday. And then last night, I noticed that the L264 is laying funny. So i did not dose the third time as planned.

The sultan plec has a ceramic cave he adores. It is barely bigger around than he is, and about twice as long. he likes to hang out in there with his tail hanging out. I noticed last night that he was laying sideways. But he came out and enjoyed the frozen bloodworms, so I thought he had just been sucking on the side of the cave. However, I was just watching him again today, and got my cell phone out to take some pics. He was laying completely upside down, and it did not appear that his mouth was touching the top of the cave, so he wasn't trying to feed off of it.

Is this normal? I'm quite concerned, as he IS one of my favs. I have the quarantine tank warming up for him, i plan to move him there, with a different, more open cave. I put the carbon filters back in the tank, to clear the melafix out incase that is the problem.

He doesn't look abnormal- as far as I can tell hes not bloated, there is no fin damage, and no wounds. He just reclines on his side or back every once in a while....

If there is any other info you need, please ask. Any input is welcome.

Here is a pic of him laying on his side. You can see the tip of his dorasl fin to the right. He did pretty much the same thing, only dorsal fin down.

ps.. he is sitting in his cave normally now. Has been for a little while. I will update again tonight, to say whether he is eating or not. He didn't appear to this morning, but he skips breakfast a lot- he prefers to eat after lights out.

I wouldn't be too worried about him laying upside down... as long as he is more active when the lights are out. My plecs always lay upside down however they usually attach themselves to the celing of a tube or something.

Okay, i'll make sure to keep an eye on him tonight.

I know they HANG upside down- they do it all the time, especially off of the rocks and drift wood. I had just never seen one LAY upsidedown, without sucking on something.

thanks,
LeeAnna

Ok, I took a moment and captured him (he's easy to catch, just pick up his cave.)
Anyways, I put him in the 'breeder' box I have, and took some pics. I think he looks ... bloated. Can plec's get dropsy?

What do you think?

Thanks so much for the response.

Someone at planetcatfish said the sultan is a female, and gravid. Any thoughts on that? I didn't know the sultan plecs could be sexed so easily.

It could possibly be bloat, though I wouldn't be worried. Try and feed more coarse bulk fiber if possible. At that size, it would have to be one of her first few clutches, if she is indeed gravid. Females of the leporacanthicus genus are difficult to sex unless you have two animals side by side.

I drop 5-6 small shrimp pellets, and 4 half algae wafers morning and night. Usually she sticks to the shrimp, although last night she enjoyed some algae.

What else can i try for fiber? I've tried pumpkin and zuccini and cucumber, and nobody, not even my piglet danios, touch it. I dropped a couple peas tonight, but the stupid things float. How does one make them sink?

Also, she used to eat lots of driftwood, that has fiber right? Theres plenty of it in the tank.
