Once summer hits I would like to start a big tank build. Thinking 8'x3'x2'...My question is, how thick should the plywood be? Can I get away with 3/4", I'm kinda skeptical but figured I would ask.

specialized002: there is a DIY Forum here on MFK where you can find threads for tank builds. Several have been very beautifully built. IMO I would check some of these threads out and follow them from start to finish. Look at the way they are constructed and take special note of what materials they use. Ensure you take notes. Write down your questions of concerns you may have.

I contacted a few of the other MFK members doing tank builds and asked them directly of my own questions of concerns I had. They were very helpful. I'm in the planning and drawing stage of mine right now. I'm not sure when I will be doing mine, but I am going to do the best I can on drawing and planing before beginning my build.

3/4" ply will probably do the trick, yes. But as I stated earlier check out the DIY FORUM to get some great ideas before you decide as to what you are planning to do. Good luck with your build, and if you can, keep me informed as to how your build progresses. I really like to see the outcome. Remember to have pictures in the process of your build so we can follow your progress.

I hope this info helps.

Respectfully,
David

Perfect Statement

thanks nes999.

Search button is your friend.

3/4" ply is fine. I am doing a 8x2x2 with 3/4" ply.

Glue, Screw, pre-drill ALL holes to keep from splitting.

Most important -------- take your time and it will come out fine.

Plenty of tanks here build of 3/4" ply only.

Good Luck, and as always post pics when you start.

Yeah, I was unsure...I like to over build things just for piece of mind. I am almost finished with my 44"x20"x26" test tank. 3/4" ply, wood screwed and glued with pre drilled holes, it all really came together nicely, gonna do 1/2" glass, again for piece of mind. Once it's finished I'll be posting all the pics I've taken from the build.
