I am soon having a new ray Tank built it's gonna be 8x3x2
I am having a sump filter and i don't have any experience in this
What I want to know is what size sump
Would be best
Obviously bigger the better but what would be a good size to get a idea
What size should the holes be drilled
Thanks

Thanks

I have a tank that size, my sump is only made out of a 30L (36"L, 12"W and 16" tall) tank so now you know anything bigger than that should serve you well.

Here it is, have a good laugh :)

The return holes in my tank are 1" but the pumps I'm using are only 3/4" output and I've just adapted it where the tubing meets the tank. The two overflow holes are 1.5" and easily handle the water flow.

Here are a couple pics of the sump on my 500 gallon ray tank. I can't take credit for the design, came with the tank, but its been working great, I have 17 rays in this tank and this sump still keeps me at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and thanks to aggressive water changes the nitrates stay under 10ppm.

The 2 PVC pipes that come in on the top on the left side come from my tanks overflow, the water flows over some blue foam pads and then through a drip tray onto the bio balls, i think there is something like 50 gallons of bioballs in this thing. Then on the right side of the sump water is pulled out and shot through a spray bar system back into the tank.

On the right side I also have a UV filter that feeds through a spray bare back into the sump adding oxygen, also have an fx5 and a sponge filter on there for extra mechanical. The sump is about 100 gallons and i am using 1.5" PVC.

At the moment I am still a sump newbie but I have my sump filled to the max even my drains from the main tank are under water if fact I have a sump that's 24 deep and it's filled to 20 deep of water with a overflow drain just in case the power goes out

The 1st part of the sump with the tank drains I have 4inch thick of gap mat

Then in then next part I have bio balls

Then in the big main part of the sump I have a bubble wall to give the media air then eheim mech and substrate pro and some syporex

The next small compartment which is only 3 inch wide I have the heaters

Then the next small compartment only 1.5 inch wide I fill with polyfilter

Then the karst compartment I have 4 x eheim compact 5000 pumps

It seams to be working ok at the moment
