I've noticed that a fair amount of the guys who make their sumps use glass for their baffles instead of acrylic. Is there a reason to this? Is there a cost difference? I'm nervous about cutting glass and would prefer acrylic and wanted to see why everyone seemed to use glass. Thanks!

no,for glass its easiest and best to use silicone, while the initial bond to acylic looks good in a few months it just falls apart.
acrylic use pvc cement or weldon neither of which works on glass

I like designs that don't require me to restrict water flow, or divide sections within the sump itself. Medias on top, dripping to the sump bottom. Simple design that requires no baffles. If your design requires baffles, then yeah, you are going to need to use glass with glass, acrylic with acrylic. Silicone won't work with acrylic, and acrylic bonding agents won't work with glass.

Who bothers with baffles? I have several tanks with sumps, I've never used them.

I'd like to see your baffleless sump...do you have any pics you can post up?

If you look in the DIY thread, I have a huge baffleless sump. Its just a 100G rubbermaid tote with egg crate and scrubbies.

With rubbermaid and tanks that are drillable I can see how you could be baffleless but i have a tempered glass tank that i'm turning into a sump. Thanks for all the info guys. Any suggestions on silicon? GE something I ?!
