Sump bio media

Can I just put my media in a pile (matrix, ceramic rings etc...)? If I build a "wall" out of them to ensure the water passes thru... I'm using my 50 gallon as a sump and don't want to make compartments

You could fill a bunch of nylon bags with the media and build your wall, like a sand bag wall.

Always better to have baffles to better direct water flow, but I would at least use some laundry bags to hold the media. Makes maintenance easier, they are like $1 at walmart. I use their lingerie bags, they zip up and are sturdy.

But for the cost of all those, and in order to not risk movement, You could also try to find a properly sized square fish safe plastic container and drill a bunch of holes in it.
