I have a 40gal breeder tank that I will be converting to a sump. I am sure this question has been asked before but cant find it at the moment. which is best to use for the baffles Glass or Plexiglas?
thanks

If it's a glass tank then glass baffles will be more secure, silicon won't stick to acrylic as good and would probably leak/or fail completely over time. So if you want it to last then go with glass.

My opinion would be to lower the first baffle so if the sock overflow the water can move on to the next stage without spilling out.
Lower the last baffle to close to water height in the return pump chamber to lessen air bubbles.
If the water has to fall over the last baffle them the bubble trap is worthless.
I don’t really see the need for all the extra foam in the second stage. If the socks are utilized then that’s would be your mechanical filter.
I would just use some type of biological in the next chamber.

You only need at most 3 baffles in a design like this- two on the left side and one on the right. Honestly don't understand the design and what you think 6 baffles are accomplishing.

Actually, you only need the two on the left unless you're trying to do some kind of moving bed in the middle or something.

I'd move the two leftmost baffles to the right, create a drip pan at the top of the left side, cover that with filter floss, and put all the bio media under the drip pan. Then only leave enough room on the right side to fit your heaters and pumps. That's a basic wet/dry setup. To me that's the simplest and most effective way to build a sump, but there's more than one way to skin a cat.
