Im thinking of building a 20g sump for my 90g tank. Right now I'm running 2 xp3's. I just set the 90 up last night, upgraded from a 55. Obviously the 2 xp3s did great on the 55 and I'm assuming theyll work just as well on the 90. But I want to do the sump to gain all the great side benefits of having a sump.

So here are some questions. I'm still reading all about flow rate, overflow designs, pump ratings and the like, so I won't ask any of those questions (I think I've got a good handle on it anyways).

If I remove one xp3 and go with the 20g sump and one xp3, I would have a micron filter sock on the sump intake and the rest would be bio (and coral for ph buffeting). I would then strip the xp3 of MOST of it's bio and dedicate it to mechanical. I think with a full stack of mech in the xp3 it would require cleaning at most once a month and I'm ok with that. Do you think this would work well?

My other question, what are the chances that a 20g sump could handle the 90gal all by itself? Or for that matter, if I can fit it under the stand I might be able to do a 55gal sump... I would ideally split the flow into two returns, but all that can be thought of later if/when I realize the sump only as an option.

Do a 29 gal aquarium as a sump I did my 180 and I also was able to fit two media reactors and the 18 in Ht gives you great water capacity if the electric goes off, I also put three media baskets of matrix and a eheim in sump 1060 pump returns the water w/o problems. Good Luck.

I like a sump to be 1/3 the size of the tank. At that size it can handle the tank it self. I think you have a good idea going forward.
