U.K
Does this work for a sump design. It is what i already have set up on my FW and it works a treat. Would it be O.K for SW. Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is a refugium ? What do i need to do one and what type of light would i need and how long would it have to be on each day ?
Thanks

Meant to add. Is it true that if you run a refugium you do not need a protien skimmer ?

Anyone ?? Surely all you salt guys out there know a thing or two about sumps ??!!

Well. Thanks for nothin guys. Guess none of you know what you are talking about ??

Testy aren't ya'? I don't know anything about the refug, but as a sump your diagram looks sound. How big is the tank that it will be attached to? GPH? Livestock in the tank? Personally I have never used a refuge on any of my SW tanks, but hopefully some one else here will be able to assist.

Try posting the design as a JPEG over a BMP

the refugium is a safe haven for macro algea and small organisms. it allows them to grow without predation. It will also produce food for fish and filter feeding organisms.

as for a skimmer I would NEVER run a SW tank without one..
The fuge grows benificial aglae that absorbs and eats nitrates. And ius a good place to grow pods and little phytoplankton and stuff for your filter feeders..
As for the sump I would make sure you have room for your skimmer and put a triple baffel in after the skimmer for a bubble trap or you will end up with a bunch of micro bubbbles in your tank..
And as for the speedy reply from anyone or everyone, this site is actually mostly freshwater people and very little Reef or SW people..(in % to members)
Try out this site www.reeffrontiers.com
very nice people and usually quick on the draw with answers and input..Mostly all reefers with a few FOWLR..

I used pretty much the same design as a refugium that you are planning to use, except I used bio balls in mine. Mine was a made out of a 55 gallon aquarium on a 125 gallon reef aquarium. I ran a skimmer and wouldn't think of having a saltwater tank without one.
